Knowledge, communication skills, commitment, and professionalism are qualities I still believe will be critical to instill in a classroom. However, I now believe it is the way you incorporate these skills into the classroom that will make a difference in students learning experiences in middle or high school.
Knowledge is pertinent to understanding students, subject content, and performing any work related tasks in the classroom. It’s not just about what you know, but rather how you go about displaying that knowledge for all to understand. Not all students learn in the same manner so it is important to give students various opportunities to learn despite socioeconomic status.
Communication with students is very important in and outside of the classroom. Knowing my students will help me to devise and plan lessons according to their abilities and likes and dislikes. Clear, effective communication skills are essential when delivering messages to students. Whether they are task oriented, personal, oral or written, a student’s perception of a message can be totally different from the way you intended. It is important to be cognizant of the way messages are delivered to students as well as the way they are delivered to colleagues and parents. If communication is misconstrued in any way, intended messages may not have desirable outcomes.
My outlook on commitment and professionalism in the teaching profession has not changed. I still believe commitment to students and their families, education, the community and oneself can only have positive effects on all. Exhibiting courteous, positive, professional conduct will allow me to keep order in and out of the classroom no matter if plans don’t go as scheduled. Modeling professionalism can only enhance the behaviors in the learning community.
My teaching rationale is one that incorporates the personal qualities I possess along with my life-long work ethic and educational experiences which includes: knowledge, communication skills, commitment, and professionalism. It is these four characteristics that I believe are qualities good teachers possess and are ones which I hope to utilize in my classroom.
